New facility on De Hoof offers housing, care, and daytime activities
Someren has taken an important step forward in providing shelter for asylum seekers. A new facility has been set up at De Hoof 24 that can accommodate up to 180 so-called “promising” asylum seekers—people who are expected to have a good chance of obtaining a permanent residence permit in the Netherlands.
What makes this location unique is that the municipality of Someren retains full control over its management. This means that the municipality itself determines how the shelter is organized and under what conditions people stay there. For now, the location is intended as a temporary facility, with February 1 as the initial target date.
More Than Just a Roof Over Your Head
At De Hoof, the focus extends beyond just housing. In addition to the residential units where residents sleep, there is also space for daytime activities and medical care right on the premises. This was a deliberate choice: by organizing care on-site, the center avoids placing additional strain on the family practices in Someren.
The layout has also been carefully designed with safety and support in mind. Security is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, supplemented by residential support and facility management for 12 hours a day. Separate kitchen units were chosen for cooking, a measure primarily driven by fire safety concerns.
Residents Informed
Prior to the opening, the municipality organized an informational meeting at the De Ruchte community center, where residents of Someren could learn more about the plans and ask questions. Such a meeting demonstrates how important it is for a municipality to maintain an open dialogue with the local community when a new shelter is being established.
With the opening of De Hoof, Someren is demonstrating that a thoughtful, well-prepared approach to providing shelter is possible—one that focuses not only on housing but also on care, safety, and community support.
